The Phoenix House, located in Everett WA was founded in 1990 by Michael T. Mathis. Michael, a burn survivor himself recognized the need for a facility where other burn survivors (mainly children) could come and receive counseling and assistance before attending camp or medical treatments away from home.
The Phoenix House is more than just that facility; it has become a “home away from home” for hundreds of children. This has become a place for children to heal and learn to deal with the trauma of every day life and the painful medical treatments that non burn survivors just can not understand. This is all done in the safety and security of this 2700 Sq Ft. location. The Phoenix House has four bunk rooms with nine beds on just over one acre of land, this serves as a tremendous safe house for learning and recovery.
Here the children are taught the skills they need to re-enter the comunity. Simple things for a non burn victim, like going in a store is a big step for a burn survivor. A burn survivor must learn how to stand up to the comments that are made. They are taught how to engage people and to teach the public what life as a burn survivor is all about. They are taught how to find the inner strength that is lost so often after a burn.
There are only 30 Trauma centers that treat childrens burns in the country and Michael’s dream is to have a Phoenix House next to every one of them. Each location being able to house up to 100 people. With Michael’s dream children and families going through the hardship of burn recovery can do this while keeping their dignity and honor as people. No longer will a mother have to go days without a place to rest, take a bath, or have clean clothes while spending the time with her child in a burn unit.
Families already devastated by the possible loss of a young one can have a place to feel safe, a place of rest and compassion at no cost to them. Where they can go and eat or cook for themselves with out the eye of the public on them every second.
With your generous donations you can help make this dream come true. You can help us locate a Phoenix House by every trauma center across America.
Please help us to give comfort and support to these families in need at their time of need by donating to Michaels dream today.
